Ghostlight welcomes two new associate ensemble members

Norman J. Burt (left) and Song Marshall (right) have joined The Ensemble.

Actors Song Marshall and Norman J. Burt have joined Ghostlight as associate ensemble members. Both have worked extensively with Ghostlight over the past year and a half.

Song was in our inaugural live reading, Girl Power! A Spice World Live Reading, and she will reprise her role as Mel B (aka, Scary Spice) in the January remount of that reading. She was also in our Thanksgiving-themed live reading, Must Eat TV, and in our short play series celebrating Pirandello at 150, Six Authors in Search of a Character. You can also catch her as Lady Basildon in our spring production of An Ideal Husband.

Norman was in our inaugural mainstage production of Six Characters in Search of an Author as the Father. He has been a staple in our live movie reading series, participating in Something Has Survived: A Jurassic Park Live Reading, You've Got READ On You: A Shaun of The Dead Live Reading and Must Eat TV: A Live Reading of Your Favorite Thanksgiving Episodes.

Why Theatre Matters To Us: Miona Lee

Miona Lee, center, in Ghostlight's production of "Six Characters in Search of an Author."

Ghostlight is sharing our personal stories of why theatre is so important to us and, in turn, to others. We hope you'll feel inspired to support the arts now and forever more.

Miona Lee, Literary Manager, Ensemble Member

"I’ve always struggled with allowing people to know the real me. Call it social anxiety, call it trust issues stemming from childhood, whatever. That fact is, I’m not comfortable around people and don’t share much of myself with others.

"I could tell you a cute story of how when I was in fifth grade I played a Marilyn Monroe version of Mrs. Claus complete with feather boa and caught the theater bug. But really, I found performing was the perfect escape from myself. I found slipping into someone else’s skin liberating. I didn’t have to bare my soul to others.

"Through the years I’ve played my fair share of Queens, fairies, villains, misguided actresses, sisters, wives, girlfriends and the occasional warrior. Each time, I burrowed into these characters to find out what it is they might be hiding from others. Sharing these flawed characters to an audience has allowed me to open up more in my own life. It’s OK that I’m flawed, there are people out there that will accept me no matter what.

"For me, theater is much more than telling important stories that remind us we’re all connected. It’s my way of slowly learning to accept myself and trust that others will do the same. "

Patrons may reserve their tickets in advance. Paying in advance guarantees you a seat. All others will be seated on a first come, first serve basis.

Two more weekends to catch 'Six Characters'

From Pirandello lovers to theatre novices, audience members have been seduced by the magic of the stage itself during Ghostlight Ensemble's production of Luigi Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author.

But if critics, rather than audience reaction, is your thing, NewCity Stage recommends our "shaggy, funky" approach to the play, adding it "captures the gap between artistic impulse and finished product and between our own sense of self and others’ stereotyped perceptions. By exposing the fakery of theater, Six Characters paradoxically reveals its capacity for truth."

Six Characters in Search of an Author continues this Friday, April 28, at Voice of the City studio in Logan Square.  The show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through May 7.

Reserve your tickets now for this classic metatheatrical play that finds new relevance while addressing the problems of modern theater.

Introducing Norman J. Burt

Norman is a last minute replacement for the role of The Father in Six Characters in Search of an Author

He comes to Chicago by way of South Carolina, where he studied theatre performance in college. You may have seen him around town doing improv with various and assorted groups. We’re thankful to Norman for stepping into this challenging role at the last minute.

As previously noted, we’ve pushed back our opening from April 7 to April 14, which will give Norman more time to settle into this role. Thanks to our audiences for their patience during this transition.

Opening night for 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' rescheduled

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ghostlight Ensemble will push back the opening of Six Characters in Search of an Author, in order to fully execute the creative team's vision.

The first three performances, originally scheduled for April 7-9, will now be used as preview weekend. Opening night will be Friday, April 14.

Previews are a set of public performances that precede an official opening. The purpose of previews is to allow the director and crew to identify problems and opportunities for improvement that weren't found during rehearsals and to make adjustments before critics are invited to attend.
Previews are performed in front of an audience and the public is welcome to attend. However, please note that because previews are technically the last stage of a rehearsal process, the show attendees see during previews may not be the finished product. Changes can, and are often made between preview and opening.

We deeply regret any inconvenience this causes. Individuals who have already reserved tickets will be contacted by our box office to arrange another date for attending. Any questions can also be directed to the box office at (773) 377-5342 or to info@ghostlightensemble.com.
Six Characters in Search of an Author runs April 14 to May 7 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Voice of the City in Logan Square. Preview performances are April 7-9.

In Luigi Pirandello's classic metatheatrical play, six characters come looking for life and find the theatre world acutely unable to make them real. Ghostlight Ensemble's production will examine the institutional racism and biases found in modern theatre and leaves the audience wondering if they were watching a show, or were they, in fact, the show.

Patrons may reserve their tickets in advance. There is no charge to reserve a seat, however there is a suggested donation of $15 for regular performance and $5 for preview performance, which can be paid in advance or at the door via cash or credit. This helps us cover the cost of rehearsal and performance spaces, as well as costumes, props and set construction.

Cast and crew bios are now available online.

Casting, production team announced for 'Six Characters in Search of an Author'

Luigi Pirandello
Ghostlight Ensemble announces casting for its spring show, Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author.

The cast is: Joshua Arroyo, Jean E. Burr*, Ana Dragovich, Nellsyn Hill, Heather L. Jencks, Miona Lee*, Matthew Lloyd, Emma Palizza, Jason Pereira, Chuck Quinn IV, Andy Ricci, Kara Rivera and Alejandra Vivanco.

The production team includes: Maria Burnham* (Director), Chad Wise* (Producer), Lisa Uhlig* (Stage Manager), Katy Vest (Costume Designer), Tim Lee (Set Designer) and Carolyn Minor (Props Designer).

In Pirandello's classic metatheatrical play, six characters come looking for life and find the theatre world acutely unable to make them real. Ghostlight Ensemble's production will examine the institutional racism and biases found in modern theatre and leaves the audience wondering if they were watching a show, or were they, in fact, the show.
Six Characters in Search of an Author — which looks at the relationship between authors, characters, actors, directors and audience — takes on new relevance in this age of reality television when fiction is often realer than reality.

"Pirandello said theatre should not be archeology, it should be adapted to contemporary ideas," said director Maria Burnham. "He wanted his work to remain relevant. With Six Characters we have this unique opportunity to use a play that has been performed for more than 90 years to examine what is happening in Chicago theatre today without any significant changes to the text."

Six Characters in Search of an Author is being produced in conjunction with Voice of the City.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Pirandello's birth and Ghostlight will commemorate the milestone with a short play festival in May, Six Authors in Search of a Character, in which six Chicago authors pen 10-minute plays around the “missing” character in The Mountain Giants, Luigi Pirandello’s final, unfinished play.

"Pirandello continues to inspire artists 150 years after his birth, and this play festival will be an ideal opportunity for people to see that inspiration made reality," Burnham added.

The festival is curated by Ghostlight Ensemble Member Miona Lee.

Tickets are now available for Six Characters in Search of an Author, which runs April 7 through May 7 at Voice of the City in Logan Square.

Please note: Voice of the City is not handicap accessible. The performance venue is on the second floor and there is no elevator access. Ample street parking is available, and Voice of the City studio is only blocks away from the Logan Square Blue Line stop, as well as the Milwaukee, Kimball and Diversey bus lines.

Patrons are encouraged to reserve their tickets in advance. There is no charge to reserve a seat, however there is a suggested donation of $15, which can be paid at the door via cash or credit. This helps us cover the cost of rehearsal and performance spaces, as well as costumes, props and set construction.

Ghostlight Ensemble Takes On Internet Trolls, Christmas Demons And Literary Characters Come To Life In Its Inaugural Season

Ghostlight Ensemble will come out swinging in its inaugural season. Literally. In its first production, the new Chicago-based nonprofit theatre company joins Nothing Special Productions on Sept. 16-17, for the 11th installment of Fight Night – a violent cabaret celebrating the art of stage combat through original storytelling and violence design.

Ghostlight’s selection, Trip, Trap, Trump, about a woman who is kidnapped by internet trolls and her sister’s fight to get her back, kicks off a half season that includes a holiday show about a Christmas demon and a piece of classic theatre history.

“Few things excite me more than sitting down with a group of fellow theatre artists to figure out how to tell a story, how to breathe life into it on stage,” said Co-Artistic Director Holly Robison. “There are so many stories to be told, and I know that that my fellow artists in Ghostlight want to find those compelling stories and tell them in a compelling way.”

To that end, Ghostlight’s first mainstage production won’t take place on a stage at all. The company is staging the Luigi Pirandello classic Six Characters in Search of an Author where it is set – in the rehearsal room.

In the age of reality television when fiction is often realer than reality, this metatheatrical play about the relationship between authors, their characters, actors, directors and audience takes on new relevance. Using this framework, Ghostlight Ensemble’s production examines the institutional racism found in modern theatre and leaves the audience wondering if they were just watching a show or were they, perhaps, the show. Six Characters in Search of an Author is set for the spring of 2017.

As a partner to that production, the company will also present Six Authors in Search of a Character, a short play festival in which six authors pen 10-minute plays around the “missing” character in The Mountain Giants, Luigi Pirandello’s final, unfinished play.

Prior to Six Characters, the company will present Krampus! – Ensemble Members Jaclyn Jensen and Mike Wozniak’s new take on the classic Christmas tale of switches and chains and devils who punish naughty children by stuffing them into baskets and dragging them to the fiery depths of hell. Krampus! opens on Oct. 31, at the Underground Wonder Bar in River North (710 N. Clark St., Chicago, 60654) and runs on select Mondays and Tuesdays through December.

As its name indicates, Ghostlight is an ensemble-based company focused on producing communal theatre. It was started by a group of Chicago storefront theatre veterans who wanted a place where their ideas were nurtured and their talents respected. The company has chosen Robison and Michael Wagman from the Ensemble to serve as Co-Artistic Directors and Chad Wise as Managing Director.

“Ghostlight Ensemble is a group of people who want to tell great stories and want to work together to figure out the most exceptional way to tell them,” Wise said. We approach theatre from a standpoint of ‘How do we make that happen?’ instead of ‘That won’t work.’

“The nature of Ghostlight's mission is to defy predictability, to fly in the face of pigeonholing and to lead the resistance against all classification save one – that of great storytelling.”

The Ensemble includes: Maria Burnham, Jean E. Burr, Keith Gatchel, Jaclyn Jensen, Miona Lee, Holly Robison, Lisa Uhlig, Michael Wagman, Chad Wise and Mike Wozniak.

“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with every one of my Ghostlight colleagues for many years now,” Wagman said. “Each of them has shown me time and again their absolute commitment to creating smart, well-crafted theatre. Their determination to make sure every detail of every show is well thought out makes me proud to be associated with them and inspires me to be a better theatre artist myself.”

In addition to its initial half season, the company also announced plans for a launch party in October.

The launch party takes place 8-11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at babyAtlas in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood (3101 N Sheffield Ave., Chicago, 60657). The event is open to the public and will introduce the company and its programming. There will be entertainment, snacks, a cash bar and an informational scavenger hunt that will give participants a chance to score some season tickets by collecting little known facts about Ghostlight Ensemble members from the members themselves. The event is free with a suggested donation of $5 at the door.

The company is in the process of finalizing its first full season. Plans call for two mainstage shows a year, as well as a limited-run holiday show in between and a summer children’s series called Nightlight.

“Nothing is off-limits in our pursuit to explore theatrical possibilities,” Wagman said. “Life is weird and serious and funny all at once. Why should theatre be any different?”

“An audience is in good hands when artists are telling stories, big or small, that they love,” Robison added. “That’s what Ghostlight is all about. We recognize the importance and power of stories – they are how we connect, how we reach out, how we challenge ourselves, how we escape, how we love and on and on. Ultimately, I believe stories are how we survive.”

Tickets are on sale now for Fight Night: Valkyries. The two-night event, featuring short plays celebrating the feminine warrior spirit, is hosted by Nothing Special Productions and takes place at 9 p.m. on Sept. 16-17 at The Edge Theatre (5451 N. Broadway, Chicago, 60640). Tickets are $18.

Ghostlight Ensemble is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit theatre whose mission it is to shed light on the human experience and provoke communal connections beyond the edge of the stage.
